last year, the central bank said Tuesday, defying expectations that unrest in the Arab world would cause a downturn in payments.

Remittances from the country's seven million-plus migrants are Bangladesh's second-highest foreign exchange earner after exports and are seen as a big help in alleviating poverty in the impoverished South Asian nation. The figure, which made up more than 10 per cent of the country's gross domestic product, represented a six per cent rise from the previous financial year, Bangladesh Bank spokesman A.F.M. Asaduzzaman told AFP.

"It is the highest remittance figure in the country's history," he said.He added that concerns that cash flows would be hit by turmoil in the Middle East and North Africa - where 70 per cent of Bangladesh's migrant workers are based - had proved unfounded.Earlier this year, more than 35,000 Bangladeshi workers were flown home after violent unrest erupted in Libya. Up to 30,000 more are thought to remain there.

Last month, the government released data showing that poverty rates had declined significantly between 2005 and 2010, with remittances playing a key role. According to government figures, seven million Bangladeshis work overseas, although unofficial estimates put the figure at around nine million. Bangladesh, one of the poorest countries in the world with a population of 150 million, counts on the inflow of foreign exchange from migrant workers to fund its imports.

Ctg port posts record growth in container handling

Chittagong Port posted 21.13 percent annual growth in container handling in fiscal 2010-11, the highest in 16 years.

The annual growth of container handling did not register such increases since 1994-95, said officials of Chittagong Port Authority (CPA). The handling of export containers saw an increase of 23.25 percent in fiscal 2010-11, compared to the previous year.

The growth in terms of handling bulk cargo, goods both in container and bulk by the port and arrival of merchant vessels also registered significant growth compared with the previous year, they added. CPA Chairman Commodore M Anwarul Islam sees it as a positive result of some recent initiatives taken by the authority and a rise in the country's exports. The port handled 14.68 lakh TEUs (twenty equivalent units) containers in 2010-11, up from 12.12 lakh TEUs in the previous year, according to the CPA Traffic Department.

CPA Director (Traffic) Enamul Karim said the growth is a record high in recent years. Besides containers, the handling of bulk cargo and goods both in container and bulk cargo by the port has increased significantly in 2010-2011. The annual growth of bulk cargo handling reached 21.82 percent in 2010-11, according to official data.

The CPA chairman, Anwarul Islam, said they could run the port activities smoothly in the last few months which helped achieve such growth in container and cargo handling. He also said an increase in the country's export and import business due to the stable political situation was a major factor. Nasiruddin Chowdhury, first vice-president of BGMEA, predicted container handling will maintain such growth in the coming years. He said the efficiency and capability of the port should be increased further. The CPA chairman said the port's capacity and efficiency would be increased significantly once the computerised container terminal management system (CTMS) is introduced. He hopes to introduce CTMS within the first week of August.

CTMS would help the port handle 30 per cent more business up to next three years and by then the New Mooring Container Terminal should be opened for operators to cope with the ever increasing growth. Anwarul Islam hoped that the turnaround time for vessels would be reduced by 12 to 24 hours with proper implementation of CTMS. He said they would take steps to stop un-staffing of goods from containers in the port area and to do the job in the off docks and inland depots to create more space in the port.

Market publisher's report on Bangladesh

Bangladesh Business Forecast Report Q1 2011

We expect Bangladesh’s economy to cool down in FY 2010/11 (July-June) with GDP growth coming in at 5.6% after provisional data showed the economy growing at 6.0% in the preceding fiscal year. As the current political climate remains fragile due to increasing angst between the two main political parties, the resulting unrest will likely hold back economic potential. Despite the recent strength of the economy’s export sector and our forecast for outperformance in H111, we expect private consumption to do the opposite due to high inflation and flattening remittances creating a drag on overall economic growth.

The country is set to experience further political instability as political unrest grows over the eviction of former prime minister and current opposition leader Begum Khaleda Zia from her home of 30 years. The opposition party, the Bangladesh National Party has called two hartals (strikes) in the space of two weeks following Zia’s eviction, spurring violence in pockets around the country.

Furthermore, the ruling Awami League’s plan to ban religion-based politics will likely bolster the nation’s international reputation in the eyes of western governments but could potentially stoke religious backlash at home. The proposed ban places severe downside pressure on Bangladesh’s long-term political risk rating of 53.8.

We are forecasting private consumption to underperform through the rest of FY 2010/11 as remittance growth continues to flatten and as high inflation constrains household budgets. A weak recovery in key markets, coupled with declining manpower exports, has led to weak remittance inflows over the past year. Rising food prices and rapidly expanding money supply growth will continue to place upside pressure on headline inflation over the coming quarters. The weakness of remittance inflows will also lead to a smaller current account surplus in FY 2010/11. On a positive note, strong export performance over the first few months of FY 2010/11 should carry the economy through H111.

Though we are forecasting private consumption to underperform in the short term, we highlight a promising domestic demand story in the long term which is a plus for the country’s long-term business environment. The country’s favourable demographic profile and the rapid rate of urbanisation offer a very compelling long-term growth story. With a score of 30.9, Bangladesh currently ranks 134th out of 167 countries in our proprietary business environment ratings. In particular, the country’s business environment is held back by weak institutions and an unfavourable market orientation.

A story of a man who wanted to buy all the monkeys

Anek din agey, a man told gram-bashi of a small village, “I will buy monkeys for 100 taka each.”

The villagers, seeing that there were many monkeys around, went out to the forest and started catching them. The boy says, "well, my mother's a Younus fan, and my father is also a Younus fan, so I'm a Younus fan!"

Being a loyal Awami League supporter, the teacher is kind of angry, so he says, "what if your mother was a brain less creature, and your father was an idiot, what would that make you?"

Momin says, "That would definitely make me a Hasina fan".

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://bangladesh-kothai-jai.blogspot.com/2010/12/hasina-vs-younus.html' title='Hasina Vs. My father was in the defence so I shared the joy on Eids with the neighboring kids rather than with my cousins, uncles, aunts. After my father’s retirement, we settled in Dhaka. In only two occasions, we went to our village home to celebrate Eid with my distance relatives. I did enjoy the village flavor, but felt no urge in going back on every Eid as all my Chacha. Mama, Fufu, Khala were always in Dhaka.

Thus my ignorance on people’s urge on heading towards village-home was mountainous. I never realized what the city people undergo on their voyage during Eid. On 26th November, three of my friends and I decided to experience ‘Shodor ghat er gangaam’ after midnight. We reached at Shodor ghat in 45 minutes from Gulshan; Dhaka was vacant as expected. We are mature, all in 30s, so no over speeding! Reached Shador ghat at 2 A.M. And yes, it was indeed Shodor ghat; gathering of people was all-around, everybody trying to enter the vessels docked in the river. No one could tell it was 2 A.M unless the watch came in rescue.

Some people were having meals in nearby restaurants, some trying to get into the vessels, some quarreling with the security guards. We got aboard a vessel. There were no inch to move; people were sleeping everywhere. We wanted to see the cabins but it was restricted. An 1000 taka note to the security guards did the trick and walla – we were given VIP treatment then on; went to the engine room, cabin, roof, pilot’s den, everywhere. People were sleeping everywhere including in front off the toilets. The vessel was scheduled to start at 10 A.M. the following morning but people occupied 12-14 hours prior to that! There were children sleeping in roofs, babies in the balcony with hands tied to their parents. I am a father on three years old, so I could relate instantly what a father goes through if he sees his child shaking in the cold.

Two of my friends were discussing the prospect of a vessel liner on our way back; I was wondering what makes the city people go through the pain of reaching village homes; there must be something, must be.

I woke up at 7:00 A.M on Eid day. Turned on the TV, and there was this news – a launch drowned in Meghna on its way to Bhola; 13 dead bodies including seven children were recovered. I saw that vessel on 26th! I saw people sleeping there. I saw children searching comfort on fathers’ shoulder! I knew then and there, the reminiscence will hunt me for a while.

As I read the newspaper today, the vessel that drowned was carrying excess people and water started pouring right after it started moving. It reached a quay in noon time; many people wanted to get down; security guards did not allow them to do so as some of them did not buy tickets by then. Desh TV reports, mother searching for a six year old, father searching for his two sons, sisters searching for their only brother. This Eid apparently stored only sorrow for the relatives and people who died, Allah knows, for whose fault. Close ones will surely remember the lost ones in every Eid they come by.

In my childhood, I was told, Eid ul Azha teaches sacrifices; I never could understand why slaughtering animals in roads is considered as sacrifice. I do not support the way it’s been done so I always wondered what to sacrifice. This time around, I know I have sacrificed my happiness……..I just can’t forget the faces I saw that night; I saw a two years old shivering in cold; is he dead?

Why?.................

Should not it be 15 months hanging till the skins gets dried up. Well, I guess not. Some would, though. Recently, Republican congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen got a call from President-elect Barack Obama, didn't believe it was him, and hung up on him, twice.

President-elect Barack Obama called the congresswoman on Wednesday, 03 December; she assumed it was a crank call and hung-up. She thought it was one of the radio stations in South Florida playing a prank.

Moments later, Obama tried again, this time through his soon-to-be chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel. "Ileana, I cannot believe you hung up on the President-Elect," Emanuel said. And guess what; she hung up on Emanuel saying she "didn't believe the call was legitimate."

A short time later, she received an urgent call from Rep. Howard Berman, the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, who informed her that she indeed hung up on Obama. This time, she was convinced. Obama tried again and was successful. President elect however did not blame her for mistaking him for a radio-station prank. He laughed about it saying in Chicago they do it all the time. They talked about Israel and Cuba.

Ileana Ros-Lehtinen congratulated Obama on winning the election and vowed to work together despite how hard she campaigned for his opponent, Sen. John McCain. Chances of this, happening in Bangladesh, is close to zero, I guess. Can we even imagine, Sheihk Hasina calling a BNP MP after winning the 29 December 2008 election to discuss Indian-Pakistan Issue? Will a BNP MP ever congratulate Sheihk Hasina on winning the election? Nope and nope. It will end up in…… oi bhondo, shubhecha desh amare! To my amazement, the news presenter said “Barack Obama”………and that was it; he went on with the next news.

It took me 15 seconds to think of a possible connection between Barack Obama and Britney Spears. MY EMPTY BRAIN. Bill Clinton alike controversy! Oh God! MY PROBLEM. I tried to figure out the drama at BBC and CNN, no luck. MY BAD LUCK. Searched Google and Yahoo and WA LA – got it! In 2008, people searched Britney Spears more than Obama at Yahoo. BRITNEY’S GOOD LUCK.

Why the channel did not show Obama’s pics when saying his name! THEIR PROBLEM. For their timely actions, first time in the history of the game, ‘Bangladesh’ managed to be in Cricinfo’s top headlines for three consecutive days. Cricinfo does not even cover Bangladesh’s matches in its headlines, unless they win against big teams. So three consecutive days is a big deal. Thanks guys, you made us proud.

The fuzz started three days back and for obvious reasons, it is emerging as the biggest shock in Bangladeshi cricket history. Several top Bangladeshi cricketers including valuable Aftab Ahmed and Shariar Nafiz have joined ICL, which is yet to be recognized by any of the cricket boards around the world. This means, these players will not participate in any matches under Bangladesh national team in future. Is this information too hard to digest? Should not be.

First thing first, no one plays cricket just for pleasure; money is important, just like in any other professions. And just like any other professions, switching is a good thing if more benefits are offered. These players opted to be professional cricketers, so they have the full rights to make decisions regarding their future. They felt, ICL is a better alternative for them so they took the chance, no big deal. No need to bring ‘DESH PREM’ here. Desh Prem should stay at heart, if not in the history books. In no way, Desh Prem should get merged with professionalism. Not in Bangladesh’s context at least.

In various forums, cricket fans are calling them ‘traitors’. Emotion, emotion, they are so touched! Well, almost every human being in this country can be leveled as ‘traitors’; considering the political and socio-economical background we have. Is not it obvious that, people who get good chance will see their own benefits, rather than hanging tough with the declining Bangladeshi Cricket?

Some members of the Cricketers' Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) termed these cricketers as 'rebels' and phrased their decisions as 'unprofessional and childish'. Well dudes, while you guys were making these ‘jealous-covered’ speeches in a non AC room, in front of some second grade journalists, those players were signing contracts worth millions of dollars and the inauguration ceremony was covered by various international channels – this is the reality, face it.

These six cricketers have some level of indignity-control it seems. Though it is obvious, they are quitting Bangladeshi cricket and joining ICL JUST for money; all of them came up with absurd excuses. The excuses were naive and most underrated ones. Coach’s negative comments, ignorance of the BCB, family reasons ----------oh, sick excuses. You guys should have come up with better ones. Shariar Nafiz is smartest in the lot – he stated education. Good luck man, do tell us after fifteen years, what bloody education you received in between these years. The players those had contracts with the BCB (I hear six of them had) should have shown the first degree of professionalism by discussing with the board before quitting or at least a week in advance. On the contrary, they confirmed the deal with ICL, booked the tickets, packed baggage, reached New Delhi and signed the contracts. The BCB surely deserves a bit more respect, no matter how cruel it was to the cricketers. Moreover, none of the cricketers had the courtesy to return the payment they already received for the month of October; come on guys, have the minimum level of decency. Though the BCB was unfair to you guys, it was the institution that has given you the exposure which you needed to finalize the deal with ICL, please do not forget this.

All said and done, this team represents Dhaka and re-present Bangladesh in ICL, whether we like it or not. Batting side looks solid, so one should expect good fights from them in the tournaments. If they do well, hat’s off. However, if they become the last team in the table, officials at the Zia international Airport must make them put their nose in the ground, when they enter Bangladesh and kick at the backs. They deserve this much.

I will be the watching the matches.

Reasoning the Chicken’s motives on crossing the road

‘Economics’ based answer of the much apprehended question “Why did the Chicken cross the road?”

Demand for eggs was higher on the other side of the road and the chicken figured that supply was not meeting market needs. Moreover, the chicken wanted a dominant market position at the other end as well. It wanted to create and develop the competencies required for the newly competitive market which forced it to explore other side of the market.

With an anti-risk averse mentality, the chicken wanted to break the duck’s monopoly at the other side of the road. The chicken knew, if it would set up a manufacturing unit at that side, it can grab the market with its highly specialized work force and competitive advantages on ‘economics of scale’.
